Barbara og Elisabeth på valgmøte med Hillary
Som deltaker på Washington-seminaret tilbragte jeg søndag 2. november i den lille byen Berryville, nord i Virginia. En liten by med omlag 3000 mennesker, som har stemt republikansk så lenge noen kan huske. Akkurat en slik by som jeg har sett i mange amerikanske filmer.
Vi startet dagen med gudstjeneste, før vi møttes til lunsj i Veteranforeningens lokaler, hvor vi roterte rundt på forskjellige bord med borgere fra byen for å høre om hva og hvordan de tenkte om å leve og bo i Berryville, Virginia, USA to dager før valget på ny president.
Det var nok flest republikanere i lokalet, men ei av de vi møtte var Barbara. Hun var pensjonert lærer, og hadde vært politisk aktiv hele sitt voksne liv. Hun var gjestfri nok til å tilby seg å kjøre tre av oss til et valgkamparrangement med Hillary Clinton, nesten to timers kjøretur unna, samme kveld. Tre av oss endte dermed opp med å dele resten av den dagen med henne.

Hennes engasjementet for sosial rettferdighen, den inderlige indignasjonen over hvor uverdig det er å bo i et land som ikke greier å gi helsesikkerhet for alle, og håpet om en ny kurs, står som den kanskje beste illustrasjonen for meg på lengselen etter endring som jeg opplevde i USA disse dagene. Og da inkluderer jeg både valgnatta utenfor Det Hvite Hus og valgkampavslutning med Obama i Manassass Park sammen med 90 000 andre kvelden før 4. november.

How do I feel about Obama being President?
Words can not begin to describe my elation. It fulfills a dream I never thought I would see in my lifetime. I spent time during my college years, in the mid 60's, working for civil rights, participating in demonstrations, and yearning for an end to the bigotry and hate that was so prevalent.

In my own personal life I have tried to live with all races as my brother or sister. Still, I have felt we were still eons away from actualization of society as a whole accepting diversity. Today, thanks to Barack Obama, I am seeing 2/3's of Americans embracing his Presidency. Yes, there are still many who are not there yet. I fear for our new President and hope he may be kept safe and secure throughout his TWO TERMS! I tear up everytime I see him speak, see his beautiful family, and think of how much he will accomplish in bringing all Americans together in love and hope. I also think of how important it will be for the rest of the world to return to respect for America.
Why do I think he got elected?
In 8 years or less, Bush and Cheney, etc. destroyed middle class America. Our poor got poorer and the rich elite got richer. The country was begging for change, and McCain and his more of the same, was rejected.

I have lived all my life in this rural area of Virginia that has been strongly Republican for a number of years. For example, I have not had a Democratic representative for over 40 years. Yet, my hometown of Winchester went for Obama, my current town of Berryville went for Obama, many, many conservative areas down the Valley went for Obama. They miraculously put color aside and went for the content of Obama's heart and character.
However, this was accomplished through the most sophisticated campaign I have ever seen (and I have een involved since 1960 in almost every Democratic campaign). There was an Obama office not only in every city, but also every town and county. Thousands of volunteers worked long hour phone banking and canvassing door-to-door. Obama made 9 campaign visits to Virginia including the rural areas. To see and hear him in person is to feel his love and compassion, his commitment to improving the lives of all here and abroad.
What is the most important change for Obama to achieve?
Wow, there is so incredibly much to do. Already he is bringing change. People are excited about the Cabinet choices and others he will have around him. He has made folks more aware of what we can do as volunteerism for non-profits has sharply increased. I know he will, not in months but in years, restore our economy and bring genuine relief. Pride will be restored to us, for our selves, our country, and beyond.. History will recognize Obama as one of the great Presidents. Meanwhile he is energizing a nation.
Where am I going to watch the Inauguration?
The local Democratic Committee has reserved the upper floor of a Berryville restaurant,.We will meet at 11:00, order lunch, and watch the festivities in the warmth and comradary of those who worked so hard on the campaign.
