Your Majesty, Minister, Excellencies, Mayor, Chairwoman, Rector and dear all –
Let me first of all congratulate you all with the 100th year anniversary!
Since 1910 - NTNU has educated tens of thousands of women and men and have played a significant role in forming of our nation. I will continue in Norwegian for a while.
NTNU is the single most important institution in the region of Trøndelag. Every year the University attracts thousands of young talents and scientists to the region. Companies are moving here to take part in their knowledge, and all the students make Trondheim a young and pulsating city. Every sixth inhabitant here is a student.
And while the University recruit students based on its excellent academic merits, the Student Organisation decided to introduce the “Sweetheart Guarantee”. They guarantee that every student will have a boy – or girlfriend during their studies. The small print says you have to make an effort yourself, and we cannot guarantee it will be a local one – but we recommend that.
The University Act of 2003 also gave the universities responsibility for social development based on its research and communication. The county has similar responsibilities for regional development. We don’t want NTNU to be or become a regional University. We want you to continue to be an international player, with students and scientists from all over the world to act upon your scene.
On the basis of common interests for the development of society - also within the region, Sør-Trøndelag county authority will, as our gift to NTNU, from 2011 establish a ph.d. scholarship in innovation, based on the main goal of the regional plan; to make Trøndelag play a leading role in the development of climate-friendly technologies and facilitating environmentally friendly businesses and ways of life.
Happy Birthday! We share the vision and passion to create!
